The Box: Barkbox
Cost: 1, 3, 6 and 12 month plans are available. $29 for just one month down to $18 for a year.
Also, if you use my referral link then I get a free box and you get 10% off any length sub. You can also use the promo code: TWIT : which will give you another 20% off and if that one doesn’t work then try: BBFF10PCTOFFXY :for 10% off. They also every now and then have sales on Groupon, Gilt City etc… But I don’t think it will get much better than combining the 20% with the 10% referral code.
The subscription is recurring unless you cancel it and it is super easy to cancel if you want – so it is safe to try this for one month with the coupon code, and then if you like it, use a different email address and sign up for a longer sub length.
You pick your size dog = small, medium or large and BB sends you 4 to 6 all natural chewies, treats, toys and other dog loving stuff every month. All of their products are sourced from the U.S., Canada, South America, Australia or New Zealand – so no worries about your dog getting some gross, weird, made in a mysterious place with mysterious ingredients stuff. They also donate ten percent of all profits to animal shelters so you can feel good about your purchase.
This is our third month with BB on a 6 month sub plan and I promise you that this will be one that we keep around for a lot longer than that 6 months. They just had a really good promo on a six month plan at the time – so I got one medium and one large plan and figured that would be enough to satisfy my 4 dogs of varying sizes.
This month the obvious theme was “Football Season”! Yes! Usually the only difference between the medium and large dog box is the size and density of the toy. There is always at least one toy in each box and I swear they send out the most durable toys ever. I didn’t even realize my dogs were that into toys until we started getting BB. I have two dogs that would be considered senior citizens (9 and 7) and two that are youngsters (2 and 3). I have always given them bones and treats and those fun little cookies and stuff that you buy by the pound and Petco – but the few toys I have gotten they have torn to bits so quickly I said “screw it”. Barkbox has seriously improved their quality of life and I feel like they love me more because of it….
Onto the box: here are pictures of the two boxes side by side (or top and bottom depending – because I still have no idea what I’m doing) –
So you see, we got five items in each box and the big difference was that the large dog box had this incredibly tough and dense blue football in it that my big dogs love and my smallest dog cannot even pick up to steal it.
We had fun throwing this to my big, sweet, fat baby Pit Bull and he’s almost learned how to bring it back.
The medium dog box had:
1: A chew stick – my dogs go nuts over these. Absolutely nuts. They can smell them in the box and just go crazy and beg for these. They are in almost every months box and I swear, I wouldn’t be mad if I got a box of just these. Since I have four dogs and only one of these in each box, I broke them in half easily and everyone got a fair share:
2: a flag football pendant – this is crinkly and has a squeaker in it, but it’s also in a tough outer shell. My little dog (Cletus) makes it his life’s mission to kill all squeakers immediately – but everything we have gotten from BB that squeaks is still alive. So they must know that there are dogs out there that are bone a fide (see what I did there?!) squeaky toy murderers.
3. Muddy Buddy Dog Mop: I have been wanting one of these for years, but have just never pulled the trigger on actually buying one. Now that I have it in my possession I am pumped because we get some God awful thunderstorms (you haven’t truly lived until you’ve been through a true Georgia thunderstorm) and we also have Georgia red clay. Combine those with a pure white dog and it is not pretty for your floors, rugs, couch, pillow, brand new skirt you just put on for work…..so I can’t wait to give this a try and see if it actually does as advertised.
4: Treat Football: so this has been the biggest hit out of both boxes this month. This thing is so cool – you pull it apart, put in little treats of any kind and watch your dogs have a blast trying to get them out. I see why it’s in the medium and not large though; because my two little dogs spent about an hour working on getting the treats out while my big guy just chomped down on it, pushed it apart and got the treats out in about five minutes. He still had five minutes of fun and I think if I stuff bigger treats in there it will make it more challenging for him.
^^^^ that’s Cletus trying to figure it out.
5: Yumzie’s Jerky Burgers treats. These are little bity chunks of yummy goodness and they are perfectly made to fill up the football. My dogs asked for, and got, the whole bag this weekend. One of my favorite things about BB is that it comes with a detailed description card that lists each item, it’s price and a special code. If you like the item and want more – you simply text the code and quantity to the number on the info card and they will charge the card you have on file with that number and ship it to you for $5 flat rate. That’s pretty simple and amazing huh?
The medium box was a winner. I feel like I completely got my money’s worth and my dogs had a good time with the toys and treats. The dog mop makes me happy and it’s raining hard today, so I can put it to the test.
The Large Box:
1: Same Football Flag. We have two so no fighting right? Wrong. Is it just mine, or do all dogs only want what the other dog near them is playing with?
2: Big, heavy, thick spiral throwing Football. This could actually be used as a toy ball with my kids – but the big dogs are loving it.
3: Chewy Stick: gone in 60 seconds
4: Indigo Smokehouse Strips: these are vacuum sealed and look like they were made yesterday:
5: Barkworthy’s dried sweet potato snacks. Ok…this one’s a dud. Not a single one of my dogs would touch these. Three of them wouldn’t even open their mouths to take them – they just refused. The fourth took it, got it on his tongue and then just dropped it. I left them for a minute and my one dog who eats anything and everything eventually ate all four pieces – but he looked miserable doing it.
So the large dog box was not as exciting as the medium box. I still feel like I got more than what I paid for because we had so much fun with the football and because those smokehouse strips look seriously delicious; but I think if I had paid for a full prices monthly box, I wouldn’t feel as good about this one as I do.
All in all though, I think BarkBox delivers excellent quality products that continue to keep my dogs happy and continue to work out cheaper than if I bought it all at the Pet store. I love watching them jump around and beg when I being the boxes in the house every month and I love that we have done more playing around with our dogs than we used to, because of the toys in the Barkboxes. That is where the real value is for me = because of the products they send, I have been more involved and playful with my dogs in the last three months than I have in the last year combined. That’s pretty priceless to me.
