Birchbox is the one that opened the floodgates to Sub Boxes. It’s the original, the pioneer. I have a yearly sub, and probably always will, because you just can’t really go wrong with Birchbox. For the last ten or so of you who don’t know about BB – for $10 or less, they send you five small, deluxe or full sized beauty items from brands you know, and brands you have never heard of. It’s a good mix of makeup, skin and hair care – plus almost every month they throw in a “lifestyle” item that is usually some type of food or tea or something. You go online when you get the box and review the items and get 10 points for each review. 100 points equals $10 to spend in the Borchbox store – which has a pretty amazing supply of items. So do your reviews every month and you will have $5 each month added back to your account.
Mine came today and I think it may be the best one I’ve gotten yet. I don’t like to do a cost breakdown on the items in the box – because really what good does it do you if your box has a value of $85 but you hate, or can’t use 3 of the items? I prefer to look at it like “was this box a good curation of interesting products that I would like to try” or “did I get my money’s worth?” This month I absolutely got my money’s worth.
Well then, for you last handful of folks that don’t get BB yet, here’s a fair representation of what they send you. It’s a perfect starter sub – or for younger subbers looking to learn about new brands. I have found so many permanent beauty routine items from this sub.
Here’s what I got:
1: Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser Starter Kit: oh man I have wanted to try this for a long time now and it did not disappoint. I waited till I got back from a long, sweaty, hot ride at the barn to wash my super dirty face with it and it felt like heaven. It has something minty, but not stingy, in it that just made my face feel so clean and soft and supple. And look at the size of the sample = enough for me to wash my face at least twenty times, with a full sized muslin cloth to “polish” it. A complete winner and I will be ordering more.
2: Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Ripe Raspberry: I love this too! It is so softening and not sticky or glossy or gloopy. The color went on very sheer at first, but then I read on the info card how it was build able color and I got it to a very nice, pretty, natural color. I will wear this down to the bottom – if I don’t lose it first.
3: Joust Luminizing Moisture Tint- Golden: I know this says Golden, but it still looks a little light for my skin. It has SPF 20 which is important to me, but I much prefer the Cotz tinted moisturizer I got as a sample in another BB and now use as part of my daily routine.
4: Davines Oi Shampoo: a new sulfate free shampoo to try! I can’t wait. I don’t know why anyone uses shampoo with sulfate in it anymore – they are just missing out. This is a big enough sample for me to wash my truly long hair at least three times – so that’s impressive. However, BB included a little pack of conditioner that probably won’t even work once. So Boo – I won’t be able to report how they work together. They also included an “all in one milk” to use after shampooing and conditioning to soften and smooth strands. That looks big enough to try at least once.
5: Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Gold Couture perfume sample: I never understood the whole Juicy track suit thing, so my first thought on this sample was “eh”. But I sprayed it on to test it and holy wow! I love it! I actually seriously love it. So while I never thought I would ever purchase a Juicy Couture item, I can absolutely see myself wearing this and being happy. One of the main ingredients is vanilla – and I read somewhere that the majority of men favor the scent of Vanilla over anything else and find it the sexiest. So now I’m down with the juicy.
All in all a damn good box! 7 samples total and now I will have to see if it let’s me review all 7 for 70 points (equals $7 in shop) in credit. That would rock!
Let me know if you are interested in being one of the last women on earth to sub to this box and I will send you my referral to get you skipped passed the waiting list; plus I can find a promo code too!
